This And That

CBS Sports offers its thoughts on the "best college football team in each state entering the 2024 season," and in New Hampshire's case it bases the choice on last year. Weak.

Here's what the post has to say (LINK):

New Hampshire -- New Hampshire: This one is quite close. Dartmouth and New Hampshire both finished with six wins at the FCS level last season. However, it was New Hampshire that captured a 24-7 head-to-head victory. Unfortunately, the two teams aren't scheduled to play this season.

Green Alert Take: Got the "unfortunately" part right. I like Fordham on the schedule but Central Connecticut not so much. The Big Green gets a pass on Merrimack, a late addition when Army finally pulled the plug on the much-anticipated, much-delayed game. New Hampshire should be on the schedule every year, period end of sentence.

Green Alert Take II: Alaska is one of two states where the choice is n/a because it doesn't have a college football team. The other? Vermont, which does have DIII football. Since CBS won't pick the best in the state, I'll go with Middlebury, which finished 8-1 last year while Norwich went 1-9 and Castleton with was 2-7.

In a story about Chicago Bears assistant Chad Morton, he talks about the traits his parents instilled in him. From the story (LINK):

Those traits also extended to his brothers, both of whom played football. The oldest - Johnnie Morton - played 12 years in the NFL, while the middle child - Eric Morton - played collegiately at Dartmouth and is now a lawyer in Japan.

Eric Morton '97, caught 55 passes for 654 yards and four touchdowns for Dartmouth. His TD catch with 19 seconds left in the 1996 Penn game gave the Big Green a 24-22 win that allowed Dartmouth to go on to an undefeated season.

From Morton's legal bio, which notes he speaks Japanese (LINK):

Mr. Morton’s work involves patent prosecution in the mechanical, electrical and chemical art fields. He started his career at a U.S. intellectual property firm and thereafter expanded his practice to Japan where he has advised and counseled many of Japan’s largest corporations.

And . . .

He uses the team-building tactics he garnered as a football player for an undefeated Ivy League Championship team to carefully listen to his clients’ desires and tailor his advice in accordance with their business and financial objectives

EXTRA POINT
Mrs. BGA and I will be celebrating our anniversary tonight with dinner overlooking the water at a lake north of Magog, Quebec. In a nod to our wedding reception, which was held on a boat in Boston Harbor, we try to dine each year on Aug. 8 somewhere on the water. This year will be the first time we've gone international – albeit barely. ;-)
