This And That

It has to be a little jarring for Dartmouth followers to see "Rice University" after the name of defensive lineman Charlie Looes '24, a fifth-year senior last fall in Hanover. Find the full "prospect interview" HERE, including this:

Overcoming adversity is what defines character, what was the hardest moment in your life to overcome?
My last year at Dartmouth we had a teammate pass away and during the same week found out our head coach, Coach Buddy Teevens, was in a biking accident. He ended up passing away at the beginning of the season and it was difficult to see how quickly things can be taken from you. Fortunately, our team was able to go through this together and fight all season to win another Ivy title in honor of them.

Rendering of Kid Zone from Dartmouth social media

The real thing from Dartmouth social media

Kudos to Dartmouth for implementing a "Kid Zone" at football games this fall, although I'd guess folks who liked to sit behind the north end zone for close proximity to the field won't be thrilled.

Green Alert Take: It wasn't long ago that kids tossing a football behind the portable stands were sent back to their seats. It's unfortunate that limited artificial turf real estate restricts where a Kid Zone can be set up, but kudos to Dartmouth for giving this a shot.

Green Alert Take II: Wonder what they have planned for the other end zone?

The Kid Zone and new rules regarding the Friends of Dartmouth Football tent are two signs of the ongoing changes in Big Green athletics. Those changes have been in full force with a restructuring of the athletic administration over the past year. There are a lot of new faces in and around Alumni Gym and there will be a couple more with these job postings going public:

Senior Associate Athletics Director for Finance & Administration/Chief Financial Officer (CFO): Responsible for providing strategic leadership for financial and business operations; provides oversight of operations, guidance on resource allocation; collaborates with senior level administrators.

And . . .

Assistant Athletics Director of Video & Creative Strategy

Hampered by injury, Jonathan DiBiaso's career as a Dartmouth quarterback never panned out and the record-setting Massachusetts high school quarterback ended up transferring to Tufts. I spotted him on the sidelines during Boston College's impressive win on Monday night and thought about getting a screenshot off the TV. I never did but the Everett Independent fills the void with a story about DiBiaso HERE.

Find Jonathan DiBiaso's Boston College bio HERE.

Green Alert Take: DiBiaso's rise in the coaching ranks brings a smile. Although his Dartmouth career didn't go the way he wanted, he never failed to have a smile, a hello and a few friendly words when I saw him at practice. He's easy to cheer for.

A columnist for the Daily Pennsylvanian offers thoughts about why Ivy League football should go to an 11-game regular season like the rest of the free world. He even touches on the unjustifiable Ivy League ban on postseason play for just one sport – football. Find the column HERE.

EXTRA POINT
We had a wonderful visit to Dog Mountain with Griff the Wonder Dog on a Chamber of Commerce day. He ran around all afternoon, met some new friends (real and carved) and spent a lot of time swimming. His joy was matched only by ours as we watched him run and jump and climb and sniff his way throughout our two-mile hike, which ended with stops in the dog Chapel and then the gift shop, both seen beyond the pond in this shot.

Griff retrieves a tennis ball at Dog Mountain.
A wet and fluffed-up Griff checks out carvings outside the Chapel.
Griff poses with a couple of wooden friends in the Chapel.

Absolutely every wall of the Chapel at Dog Mountain is filled with photos and touching memories of well-loved dogs (as well as some cats and even a rabbit). There also are year-by-year photo albums where visitors inserted full pages honoring their four-legged friends.
