Breaking News

Per FootballScoop and CBS Sports, Dartmouth is expected to hire Shane Montgomery as its new offensive coordinator. From the Scoop (LINK):

Dartmouth (FCS - NH): Sources confirm Shane Montgomery, a veteran college offensive coordinator who spent last season at UMass where he took over as interim head coach following the dismissal of Don Brown, is expected to join the Dartmouth staff as offensive coordinator. CBS Sports has shared the same.

The post by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reporting the news is HERE

Find Montgomery's UMass bio HERE and a Wikipedia page detailing a coaching career featuring 10 stops – including four seasons as head coach at Miami University – HERE.

UMass finished 2-10 last year.  In Montgomery's first game as interim coach, against No. 10 Georgia, UMass was down just 21-14 in the final minute of the first half before falling, 59-21. A week later the Minutemen took 8-4 UConn to the final seconds of a 47-42 loss.

From a piece Peyton Manning wrote about Buddy Teevens HERE:

There was something about Buddy that just drew you in. He listened and made you feel heard. He was generous and genuine. Buddy cared -- and somehow, you knew that from the moment that you met him.

That's probably what made him a great recruiter. It's definitely what made him a great person.

Did you catch The Buddy Way last night on ESPN2? Even if you did, it's worth pulling up the slightly longer version available on ESPN+.

Green Alert Take: Even though I had seen the longer version in the Hanover premiere a night earlier, I watched the ESPN2 version 24 hours later, and was still moved.

Isthmus, "an independent, local news source based in Madison, Wisconsin," has a piece headlined University of Wisconsin stumbles toward player equity that uses a high school wide receiver who turned down an offer from Dartmouth to make a point about the chaotic state of college sports. From the opinion piece (LINK):

No story says more about the state of big time college sports than that of Chris Kiel.

Kiel is a standout wide receiver for Mount Horeb High School. He was heavily recruited by colleges and he had narrowed his choices to North Dakota State and Dartmouth. He chose North Dakota State.

The reasons he gave all made perfect sense from a football perspective. If academics entered into his decision, they weren’t mentioned in the State Journal story about him.

My intention here is not to second guess the decisions of a young man in his position. He is not only an outstanding athlete but he’s bright enough to get into Dartmouth. Good for him. I wish him well.

The piece finishes this way:

Personally? I think Chris Kiel made the wrong choice. But it wasn’t my choice. It was his and, finally, kids like him have the freedom to make their own mistakes or find their own fortunes. And that’s more important than anything else.

For the record, HERE is a brief story about Kiel opting for North Dakota State.

EXTRA POINT

We had an overnight guest last night who will be heading home later today. Iggy, a black Labradoodle, is an old friend of Griff the Wonder Dog.

Iggy is an easy house guest but he does have one stark difference from Griff. At about 10:15 last night Iggy let out a couple of pretty loud barks, informing us that our driveway was being plowed. And this morning, Iggy barked again, letting us know we had a house invader: a round robot vacuum zipping around our downstairs.

As you may have read here before, Griff usually barks once a year, whether he has to or not. It's often when he's chasing something in a dream (or maybe that something is chasing him ;-). But now that Iggy has me thinking about it, I don't think Griff actually did bark last year.
