This And That

And from Dartmouth sports publicity:

For those of you who prefer to read, here’s a lightly edited transcript I prepared:

Coach Mike Johnson:

We have a mature group. I think their approach and the way they operate in meetings and practice, off the field, they're handling their business. We laid a good foundation in the spring. Like I say, we have some mature guys who get it, who've played some reps. We also got some young guys who were working through that dynamic. We have a good group of leaders in that room who are showing them the way. But the other good thing about the young guys is they're Focus, they care, and as is everybody else in the room, so I've been pleased so far.

(Patrick Campbell is) the bell cow. You know, he's played a lot of reps. He's got that experience that not the entire room has. And the guys are leaning on him heavily, and he's handling it well. He's a mature kid. He carries himself the right way. He's got a pro mindset in the way he approaches the game, how he operates in practice, getting in and out of drills. He plays with great eye discipline and all that good stuff, but the guys see that as an example.

(Jorden Barnes) has been awesome. In the spring, he was our most improved player. We moved him to corner in spring permanently, and he accepted that. He took it as a challenge. He relished in that moment and grew a lot in the spring, schematically, technique-wise, with his eye discipline.

The three things that they've said is: number one, they want to dominate, right? Number two, they want to be a brotherhood. And they want supreme confidence in everything they do. And you can see that on the field. They're a really close-knit group. They work together. Everything matters to them. They take a pro mindset in their approach. Those three things are our main ones we focus on, and we'll go from there and continue to work.

Corner Patrick Campbell

We've got  a young group right now, not a lot of experience in the corners, but everyone's hungry. Everyone's able so I see a lot of people that have a lot of potential, a lot of ability. We’re just trying to refine the small tools really to get everybody on the same page.

Me being a senior now, I have to be more of a vocal leader. With all the wisdom that I have, I'm just trying to pass it on to the younger guys so that we can be out there all on the same page doing the same things. Because playing DB is a very hard position. If you make one mistake, then that could be six. But we're going to be out here locking people up. So, that's the goal, and we're doing to do some good things.

This is fun:

“Second-year coach Blaine McCorkle” is actually Samuel Blaine McCorkle, and yes, he’s the cousin of Dartmouth head coach Sammy McCorkle, and the son of Sam McCorkle, former head coach at both the University of West Alabama and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Perhaps not surprisingly, this is how the Northwestern State coach's bio on the school website begins (LINK):

In Blaine McCorkle’s family, college football is the chosen profession. In less than two decades in the family business . . .

For the record, Northwestern State coach Samuel Blaine McCorkle has a son named, you guess it, Sammy.

EXTRA POINT

It’s raining a bit this morning and I’m glad. That should give you an idea how incredibly dry it has been in these parts this summer. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want my lawn and field to green up and turn into a jungle, but there’s just too much brown out there right now.
