Last night:
Princeton 17, Columbia 10
Columbia fashioned a 10-0 lead by scoring on its first two possessions but that was all the Lions could muster as the Tigers slammed the door and rallied for the win before 4,286 in New Jersey.
Princeton’s first points came after a tipped pass and diving interception gave the Tigers (2-1, 1-0) the ball at the Columbia one in the final minute of the first half, and they punched it in with 49 seconds remaining before the break.
The home team took a 14-10 lead on a 71-yard drive capped by a two-yard run early in the fourth quarter and tacked on a 38-yard insurance field goal with 9:21 to play. With its starting quarterback knocked out of the game and the backup out with an injury, Columbia (1-2, 0-1) marched from its own 10 to the Princeton 42 behind a freshman QB only to have a Hail Mary at the end knocked away in the end zone.
Brown 28, Rhode Island 21
James Murphy completed 20-of-27 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns, and the Brown defense forced four turnovers as the Bears stunned a top-10 URI team in front of 5,047 in a neutral-site game in Pawtucket.
Brown, which was coming off a 41-7 loss to Harvard, improved to 2-1 with its first win over a top-10 team since a 1981 victory over Rhode Island. The Rams, ranked eighth in one poll and 10th in another, fell to 4-2.
Brown opened the scoring on a short touchdown after an interception on URI’s third play of the night set the Bears up at the plus-10 yard line. A forced fumble that rolled out of the end zone cost Rhode Island a sure touchdown in the third quarter, and an interception with 30 seconds remaining put the final stamp on the upset.

EXTRA POINT
West Newbury Hall in our little village hosts a newcomer breakfast each year as well as pancake breakfasts, talent shows, talks, open mic nights and country dances and other events. The 64th annual turkey supper, when volunteers roast up dozens and dozens of turkeys, is one week from today.
A few clues reveal you’re in West Newbury, like a sign on the tiny post office building on Snake Road. Nearby on Tyler Farm Road is the West Newbury Congregational Church, which stands directly across from the West Newbury Hall. Blink and you’ll miss it, even though it’s the heart of the village.
One person quoted in the story:
"West Newbury is a place that’s loosely defined. I’m a mile-and-a-half from West Newbury. But it’s a badge of honor to be from West Newbury, so I declared that I am.”
And another from a longtime resident:
“If you say you’re from West Newbury, then you are. Maybe not geographically, but if you’re part of the spirit of West Newbury, you’re considered part of the community.”
And this about the role of the building in the little village:
"There wouldn’t be a village without the hall. I think the hall is a place where the past still exists. It gives us a feeling that we are part of the same place—and that we care about each other.”
