And They're Off

I spoke with Buddy Teevens at about 11:15 a.m., east coast time. He and Dave Shula had finished breakfast out with San Diego host Rick Bayless and were about to be ferried to their Escondido launch point. Buddy reports the bikes survived the trip west without incident and that Sunday night's dinner, attended by Sandy Alderson, Lou Kartsonis '73, Ed Miller '41, Bob Adelizzi ‘57, incoming recruit Spencer Hood (and family) -- among others -- was a hit.

Told to keep an eye on Teevens, Shula joked: "He's already calling me Mom. Got to make sure he's got his sun screen, stuff for his lips and all that."

The majority of this first day will be spent on California Route 78. If the first day is rough the pair may call it a night in Brawley, south of the Salton Sea. If they are making good time and have the energy, they may try to pedal all the way through to Blythe, just shy of the Arizona border. Brawley looks to be about 125 miles. Blythe would be another 90 miles or so.

Check back tomorrow morning to find out where they spent the night, how the day went, and Tuesday's plan.
