Harvard Editorial Favors Playoffs

10:15 a.m. update: The Boston Globe has a brief on Harvard's basketball recruiting issues and the Ivy League's response.

From an editorial in the Harvard Crimson, and no, this isn't about basketball coach Tommy Amaker:

University President Drew G. Faust will sit on the committee to select a replacement for (Ivy League executive director Jeff) Orleans. We hope that she and the selection committee will urge Orlean’s replacement to lift the ban on the football playoffs in the name of equality.

Penn has "announced" its football schedule. Nothing new but hey, it's football.

Now back to Harvard and Amaker, a story that is reverberating around the country. How about this hit from a column headlined Eight Ideas For Teams With Playoff Byes This Weekend on the Inside College Hockey site?

Interesting piece in The New York Times about possible recruiting violations by Tommy Amaker at Harvard. In other words, it's only a matter of time before student-athletes start rolling up at Cambridge in their Hummers.

The Frederick Post writes about Amaker:

The man has changed the fortunes of three colleges, and none for the better.

The Harvard Crimson has a column suggesting everyone wait and see what proves out. From the column:

If he hasn’t broken any rules, he shouldn’t be blasted for spearheading the recruiting renaissance that could make that a reality. And Harvard shouldn’t be denigrated for trying to alter the status quo of its basketball program and the Ivy League landscape.

And finally, we dodged snow last night in favor of ice. Seems every school around here has a two-hour delay this morning ... except Hanover. After all those snow days – and a lot of emails suggesting they weren't all necessary – the superintendent couldn't pull the trigger today, so the buses are running.
