The inspired play of first team All-Ivy running back Nick Schwieger ’12 led the football team to a sixth place finish in the Ancient Eight. Schwieger led the league in rushing with 78.3 yards per game and led the team to a 28-6 Homecoming victory over Columbia to snap a 17-game losing streak. Free safety Pete Pidermann ’10 and cornerback Shawn Abuhoff ’12 also earned second team All-Ivy honors as a young Big Green squad battled a tough non-league schedule and improved steadily as the season went on. Abuhoff also earned a spot on the All-New England FCS Team while Tanner Scott ’11 was named an Academic All-Star.

The Dartmouth Football parents will be selling seat cushions under the Friends of Football tent this fall as one of its fund raisers. There are nine advertising squares available on the back of the cushions with four still available. The cost per square is $500 with the proceeds from both the advertising and the sale of the cushions going to the Dartmouth Football Parent Fund which helps defray costs for the end-of-season banquet, coaches gifts, etc. If you are interested in sponsoring a square, send me an email and I'll point you in the right direction.*
And finally, hooray for Cheap Tent.First, a little background.
Four years ago when we were going to be hiking Grand Canyon and spending several days down at the Phantom Ranch campground, we debated bringing a tent. Expert opinions varied on whether it was necessary and the original thought was it would be better to carry more water and less tent ;-)
We were a couple of days from the Canyon and still wondering about the no-tent decision when the topic of scorpions came up. A paperback guide said they can be waiting in your sleeping bag or hiking shoes if you aren't careful. That was good enough for me and on the Fourth of July (if you can believe it) in Durango, Colo., we spent $29 to buy little Cheap Tent. Oh, they had very nice backpacking tents for big bucks but we already had a couple of nice tents at home and so we chose to roll the dice and buy something we could toss when we were done with it instead of lugging around the West with us.
Well, it worked fine in the Canyon. No scorpions and it kept us dry during a rare downpour at the bottom, so we didn't toss it. Not only that, because it's small, light and incredibly easy to set up, we continue to use it on occasion. In fact, we brought it with us to Happy Valley – and chances are I'll bring it to Bucknell in two months when I'll be camping again to keep costs down.
But as I said earlier, hooray for Cheap Tent. The forecast late this week had been for chance of thunderstorms late in the day. Well, they got that one right. It poured last night. I mean, it rained hard.
I still remember going out to a grocery story and buying sponges to get water out of our high-priced tent on a Friday before a Colgate game a few years ago, but no need for sponges last night. Sure, a good campsite helped, but hooray for Cheap Tent, which once again kept us dry.
