More on the Holy Cross Win

The Worcester Telegram story on Week Five opponent Holy Cross's opening win over Howard is accessible if you sign up for the site. (Free access allows you to read 10 stories a month.) The 38-7 victory marked the debut of new quarterback Ryan Taggart, who took over for Dominic Randolph. Crusader coach Tom Gilmore:
“Overall, he had a good day. We did make some mistakes, and he was a little off on a couple of plays, but hey, first-game jitters. When he settled down, he was starting to hit the throws a lot better.”
Holy Cross held Howard's triple-option offense to one score despite missing All-Patriot League safety Anthony DiMichele, held out with a concussion but due back for the game with UMass this week.

The Yale Daily writes about the Bulldgs' 50-0 dismantling of Division III Union. It notes that last fall Yale posted a 36-14 win over a Union team that went on to finish 8-3.

Brown Bear Blogger reports the Bears defeated Columbia in their scrimmage, 31-0. It doesn't sound as if the starting quarterback for either team played but details are sketchy beyond the final score and a 24-0 Brown lead at the half. Worth noting is that Brown won the scrimmage between the teams handily last year and Columbia won the end-of-season meeting, 28-14.

Dartmouth will be playing a preseason game against Harvard Friday at 1 p.m. in Boston. The event is somewhat unique in that it is played as a regular game rather than a scrimmage. Unlike the Brown and Yale affairs, it is closed to the general public.

The Dartmouth jayvees will be playing the University of Vermont club team for the third year in a row on Sept. 26. Neither of the first two games was competitive but the Catamounts continue to try to grow their program. They are now members of the Yankee Collegiate Football Conference, a group of club teams from the University fo Maine, Clarkson, Boston University, Northeastern Connecticut, Southwestern Connecticut and The Bronx. Vermont's team page can be found here. Vermont, of course, dropped the game at a varsity level more than 35 years ago, leading to the production of one of the cooler collector's-item T-shirts you'll find.

It's back to the salt mine for the Dartmouth football team today with the next-to-last double session. Coverage of both practices will be posted on Green Alert Premium with the morning session story up before the afternoon session begins.
