Catching Up With 2 Recruits

The Commonwealth Journal in Somerset, Kentucky has a story about Southwestern High School's Zack Fowler "signing" with Dartmouth. The story notes that the high school defensive end is the first graduate of Southwestern to join an Ivy League program.

According to the Journal, the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Fowler holds school records with 26 sacks and 10 fumble recoveries. He had 102 tackles, nine sacks and 16 total tackles for loss last fall.

The story says he was, "recruited by Stanford, Army (The United States Military Academy at West Point), Vanderbilt, Princeton and Louisville."
*
Scout.com has a story about Houston quarterback/athlete Jordan Are' choosing the Dartmouth "Mean Green." (ouch) From the story:
"I pretty much fell in love with the school when I visited," said Are', who quarterbacked his Alief Taylor team to a 10-2 mark as a senior. "The people at Dartmouth were very personable and down to earth. Their coaches were very, very excited when I told them that I was going to Dartmouth. The weather wasn't that bad, either. It was only negative-seven degrees when I visited -- better than I expected.

"It came down to Indiana and Dartmouth, and Indiana has great academics, but I have really high expectations. I plan to major in political science, which is called 'government' at Dartmouth, and I want to be a sports agent in the future.
According to the story, Are', "threw for 23 touchdowns and amassed approximately 2,500 yards of total offense in 2010, turned down offers from Harvard and Tulsa, among others.."

The College Sporting News has compiled school-by-school/conference-by-conference FCS recruiting lists. Don't go looking for commits to the Ivies or Patriot League, though, because the list is for players who signed "Letter of Intent."
*
Speaking of the Letter of Intent, the BGA Q&A with Chris Lincoln, author of "Playing the Game, Inside Athletic Recruiting in the Ivy League," has him responding to several questions including:
  • Why doesn't the Ivy League recognize the letter of intent and should it?
  • What can you tell us about "likely letters?"
*
A reader shared a story well worth reading about a 6-5, 300-pound lineman at Norfolk State who has his priorities straight.
*
Two oddities. We had a little lightning here last night and I've got to tell you, it was really strange to see the way it lit up the snow. Kind of eerie, actually.
*
And this, which will probably leave you thinking I'm a little crazy. Coming up Tuck Drive yesterday, I thought I noticed something odd. I asked Mrs. BGA what she thought and she agreed with me. I almost hesitate to write this because of that crazy thing, but it sure looked to us as if, from that angle, Baker Tower was leaning, ever-so-slightly, to the right. That would be toward the Green. Take a good, long look and see if you don't agree. (And please, no jokes about "right-leaning" Dartmouth ;-)
