Teeing It Up

Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim (center) tells the football gathering he'll hit a half dozen drives off the first tee – or more if needed because, he reminded them, he's the president :-) – and if they outdrive him they win a dozen Dartmouth Pro V1 golf balls. To his right is Hanover pro Alex Kirk, who has been known to work a bit with the president on his very nice golf swing. (Click photos to supersize)
The president didn't need more than his official allotment of shots to stripe the first fairway with a pretty healthy drive or two.
Among the raffle and auction gifts at the gathering was a selection of Things Shula. David Shula '81, of course, was Dartmouth's record-setting receiver.
A pair of mini-helmets looked ready for action.

One of the best sights of the day came early, at the Friend of Dartmouth Football meeting. Presenting an overview of his side of the football was defensive coordinator/linebacker coach Don Dobes, who was moving pretty well for a guy who had a hip replacement procedure just nine days ago. Dobes, who struggled physically during spring ball, said he's ahead of schedule and looking forward to being full-go before long.

One of the more interesting tidbits to come out of the Friends meeting was this: With the hiring of David Jenkerson, Dartmouth is now the only school in the Ivy League to have a strength and conditioning coach who is working full-time with football. But that's not all. The Big Green is also the only school in the Ivies to have an assistant strength and conditioning coach working solely with football.

It was also revealed at the meeting that work has begun on the installation of lights at Memorial Field and they will be up and operable as scheduled this fall.
*
No specific details were offered but the group was told that Dartmouth is planning high-definition streaming (with announcers) of games for purchase this fall.

Among the better quotes at the Friends meeting:

"We like to say we have a pair and a spare now at the tailback position."
Offensive coordinator Keith Clark on tailback where Dartmouth returns Ivy League co-Player of the Year Nick Schwieger, Dominick Pierre, who showed last fall as a freshman that he's going to be one of the elite backs in the Ivy in short order, and Greg Patton, who just happens to be the school's single-game rushing recordholder and is finally healthy again.

"Thank you for staying on the bus. It's going someplace this season."
Dartmouth head coach Buddy Teevens
