Speaking of Schwieger, he's the fourth-leading returning rusher in the nation at 125.6 yards per game. And yet when The Sports Network came out with its Payton Award Watch List for the top offensive player in the FCS, his name was nowhere to be found. It's totally understandable why Colgate's Nate Eachus is on the list after leading the nation in rushing yards (1,871) and carries (317) and scoring 22 touchdowns, which tied for the national lead. But listing Mike Mayhew of a 1-10 North Carolina A&T team (98.4 yards per game) and Jonathan Grimes of William & Mary (47th in the nation last year at 73.9 ypg) ahead of Schwieger? That's a lack of respect for the Ivy League. Could it have anything to do with the fact that Ivy teams don't step up to the plate at playoff time?*
Abuhoff has been chosen to the College Football Performance Awards Kickoff Returner Watch List, which is 41 players deep and includes no fewer than three players from Morgan State, two from North Carolina A&T (someone is doing some pretty good PR down there) and two from Georgia State and Holy Cross. Brown's Mark Kachmer is on the list along with Chris Smith of Yale.*
The Dartmouth Review chimes in about Charles Bay playing for the US National Team in the world championships.*
Harvard sports information catches up to quarterback Collier Winters winning the quarterback competition over an impressive field at the Manning Passing Academy. Winters' story elicits a few thoughts from Jake Novak of the Columbia football Roar Lions Roar blog that will get folks talking.*
A center from Alabama who received interest from Dartmouth and Penn and had fielded an "offer" from Yale has chosen to attend Alabama Birmingham according to this story.*
The blog was delayed this morning because I took Sister BGA into town to catch the Dartmouth Coach to Logan Airport in Boston. Yesterday, by the way, we visited the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site about a half hour south of Hanover. I'd been to the home and studio of the great sculptor several times in the past, but not in a few years. We took the "art" tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Whether you like art or not, the grounds and view alone would make a trip down the river worthwhile the next time you are in town. It's a very beautiful, incredibly serene place. We capped Sister BGA's visit last evening with a picnic and movie at the Fairlee Drive-in, about 30 minutes north of Hanover, where the animated feature Rio was showing. A couple of thoughts on that. First, it's officially the Fairlee Motel & Drive-in Theater where you can get a room and watch the flick through the window. Um, no.
And second, should you head up for this slice of Americana, be sure to bring a portable radio. We know to do that but forgot and sitting outside the car with clunky old drive-in speakers that didn't work we had to blast the car radio to hear anything.
