Saturday's games with some pithy comments . . .
Penn 27, Columbia 20
Any thoughts that the winless Lions will be a walkover Saturday disappear as Penn needs another "refuse-to-lose" drive engineered by Billy Ragone to score the winning touchdown with 25 seconds left. Two false start penalties and a delay of game with the ball on the Penn 3 force Columbia to kick a field goal to tie the game with 1:31 left instead of go for a touchdown and the lead. That is followed by what would prove to be an ill-advised squib kick that sets Penn up for the winning touchdown at its 44.
Brown 34, Princeton 0
The Bears get an interception return for a touchdown 57 seconds into the game and things go downhill for Princeton from there as the Tigers get just 82 passing yards and 208 yards total. Kyle Newhall-Caballero throws for 229 yards and the Bears add 162 on the ground.
Colgate 35, Cornell 28 OT
With standout tailback Nate Eachus and quarterback Gavin McCarney both out, Jordan McCord carries 21 times for 84 yards and the winning touchdown in overtime on offense and posts three tackles and an interception on defense. The Raiders survive a late push by Cornell, which scores 10 points in the final 1:15 to force the extra session. Even without Eachus Colgate punctures the Big Red for 291 yards on the ground.
Harvard 42, Bucknell 3
Colton Chapple completes just 13-of-23 passes for 176 yards, which doesn't sound like much after he topped 400 yards last week, right? Well, those 13 completions include five touchdown passes. Five. Harvard also has a 223 to minus-5 yard advantage on the ground.
Lafayette 28, Yale 19
One week after stifling the Dartmouth air game, the Bulldogs allow the Leopards to complete 22-of-28 throws for 205 yards and are outgained on the ground, 120-91, as they put up another stinker in Pennsylvania. As he did after Yale was hammered at Lehigh two weeks ago, Bulldogs coach Tom Williams may want to get out the air freshener again.
Sacred Heart 60, St. Francis 45
The Pioneers win this one at the free throw line. Oops, wrong sport. Sacred Heart piles up 588 yards and St. Francis 527 and the teams combine for 47 points in the fourth quarter.
