The late and lamented Ivy League record book was a wonderful source for quickly pulling together information on not just championships, but second-place finishes, thirds, fourths, etc. Can you do that on the web? Yes, but it is much more time consuming and can be frustrating.
Which brings me to a followup on yesterday's posting about Ivy League championships over the last four years that included this thought:
Keep in mind, there's a lot more to judging success than a simple summary of championships won. As Athletic Director Harry Sheehy has said, you have to put yourself in position to win titles before you can start winning them. By that yardstick, the Big Green has been making progress.I didn't have the time or energy yesterday to dig up evidence of that progress by visiting all the individual Ivy League team pages. Fortunately, those numbers have been collected in Alumni Gym. That being the case, here is a little more about how Big Green teams have fared as provided by the Dartmouth athletic department:
"Not to excuse our lack of success in winning championships, but over the same four-year period Dartmouth teams finished in second place in the Ivy League fourteen times and tied for second four times. Twelve different teams accounted for these eighteen top-2 finishes. We are knocking on the door but need to learn to knock it down."
