Import(ant) Kicker

Kicking guru Chris Sailer is Tweeting that David Smith, a 5-foot-11, 171-pound kicker from Montreal by way of St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., is headed to Dartmouth.

Smith is also a talented wide receiver and starting point guard on the St. Paul's basketball team according to his statement on his NCSA page.

Here's is a video of Smith kicking consecutive 50-, 55- and 60-yard field goals off the turf:

Here's his Chris Sailer page with his highlight video.

So you want to go big time?

The Boston Globe quotes Max Page, a co-chairman of the the University of Massachusetts' Ad Hoc Committee on FBS Football, from a report presented last week to the university’s faculty senate:
“What becomes clearer each year is that this is a huge financial disaster for the university."
UMass has gone 1-11 in each of its first two seasons in the Mid-American Conference. Average attendance this year was 15,830 at Gillette Stadium, the UMass home away from home. By way of comparison Yale, aided of course by hosting The Game, averaged 19,809.

The Globe writes that students and taxpayers "have spent $1 million more than projected to help fund the first two seasons of the UMass Amherst football team’s ambitious — and so far disappointing — upgrade to elite collegiate competition ..."

UMass will receive $850,000 for taking a beating at Penn State next fall and should see a much larger crowd than usual when Boston College visits Gillette. Of course, while UMass will be the home team for the latter game the expectation here is it will be the home team much the way the Expos were the home team when the Red Sox visited Montreal and the usually empty stadium was filled . . .  with Sox fans.

More scary UMass numbers in this detailed story.
The Weather Service got it right last night. We got down to 12.7 below zero. That's the coldest so far this winter but I'm hopeful we can do better ;-)
