The Senior Class

Here's a look at the Dartmouth football video that introduced this fall's senior class back when they were Big Green recruits:

It's all dressed up and we can only hope it has somewhere to go. Huh? I'm talking about the 2020 Dartmouth football Wikipedia page, which has been updated HERE.
Just like the rest of us, Dartmouth football is looking here, there and in the mirror for material to post on its social media feeds during these unusual times. Here's something that just went up on Twitter:

The athletic director at Fordham is retiring and as the great Thomas Magnum would say (the real one, not the impostor), "I know what you are thinking."

It's probably this: Why is he mentioning that?

Well, part of the reason is Dave Roach was AD at Brown for 14 years. He then went on to Colgate, where he was AD for eight years before moving on to Fordham in 2012.

The main reason for mentioning Roach, however, is that unlike virtually any other AD, those of us in the media actually got to know Dave a little bit. He made a point of stopping by the press box before every football game to shake hands and chat with the writers and radio folks among others. We would see him here in Hanover or at Colgate or Brown and look forward to seeing him each time Dartmouth played one of his teams.

It was a very nice touch.

I've always had a soft spot for Dave Roach and there's another reason why. When he was at Brown they had a Beanie Baby giveaway at one football game and for a reason I can't seem to remember the two little Dartmouth fans who would grow into That Certain Dartmouth '14 and That Certain Nittany Lion '16 weren't going to be able to get one. Through a mutual friend Dave made sure they got 'em. Thanks, Dave.
The loss of former Dartmouth quarterback Ernest Evans '16 has been felt by many around the country who have expressed an interest in reaching out to his family. The address provided by his mom is now posted at the bottom of the note from Coach Buddy Teevens HERE.
A regular reader shared a link showing that former Dartmouth interim president Carol Folt, has had quite a lifestyle change since her days in Hanover. Now the president of USC, she moved into a decidedly un-Upper Valley-like residence in Santa Monica, Calif., for a reported $8.6 million. (LINK)
EXTRA POINT
For Christmas I received a standup desk thingie that sits on my regular desk and allows me to raise my keyboard, laptop and monitor so that I can work in a standing position. I wanted the standup desk mostly because when I am working on a project I spend way too many hours sitting and typing, and my back paid the price.

An extra benefit is that while seated at my desk I am unable see out my office's raised windows, which provide beautiful views of New Hampshire's White Mountains. The standing desk allows me to see not just the mountains in the distance but our field out front as well as several nearby fir trees.

While I get a kick out of the armies of turkeys that frequently march across our field, earlier this week I spotted what seemed like an unusual bird perched atop one of the firs. I pulled out my binoculars for a better look and grabbed my camera to take a shot. While the picture I got with a short lens was a little blurry it was good enough that thanks to the Internet I could ID as a Loggerhead Shrike.

We're all (I hope) having a lot of extra time at home these days and if you happen to spot a bird you can't identify, it's easy and fun at Whatbird.com. Give it a try!
