Excitement Building In NYC

With Homecoming in New York City on tap and the possibility of an historic season, the Columbia Spectator has gone all-in on football this week.

The Spec's coverage includes a story headlined, Football to play Dartmouth in homecoming matchup for first place in the Ivy League; The Ivy League’s top two teams will duke it out this Saturday in front of a homecoming crowd at Wien Stadium. Among other things, first-year Columbia head coach Jon Poppe tells the writer (LINK):

“You need to make sure you play great fundamental football. That’s the one thing that Dartmouth has prided itself on, and that’s the reason why they’ve been so consistent at winning games.”

The Spec also has a story on Poppe's path to Columbia (LINK), a Q&A with sophomore quarterback Chase Goodwin (LINK), and a piece on running back Malcolm Terry, who began his college football career at Navy (LINK).

If this year has reminded us of anything it is that simply picking the winners of Ivy League football games is hard, and betting on them is beyond stupid. That said, it's fun to see who the Wise Guys favor each week in the Ancient Eight.

Unfortunately, since the offshore guys went belly up after sports betting went mainstream,  FCS odds can be hard to come by, and generally aren't available until shortly before the game.

To the rescue comes a "sports book" created by a sports geek (or geeks) just for fun. And judging by the research they've done on how their odds stack up against the real thing, it would seem they've done a pretty fair job of mimicking the Wise Guys. (LINK)

All that's by way of saying here's how they see this week's Ivy League games:

• Dartmouth is a 2-point underdog at Columbia.
Yale is a 2½-point underdog at Penn.
Cornell is a 5-point underdog at Brown.
Princeton is a  9½-point underdog at Harvard.

STATS Perform has named 30 players to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List for the top freshman player in the FCS this fall and two Ivy Leaguers get a mention. (LINK)

• Brown running back Matt Childs – 166 yards rushing along with a team-high 282 yards receiving, including 101 against Harvard and 93 against Bryant

• Princeton defensive end AJ Pigford – 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, all in last three games

EXTRA POINT
Yesterday I broke out my bright orange hiking vest for two reasons.

First, although I've never seen a hunter  in the hundreds of times I've been on my normal trail during hunting season, there is a sign warning that the land is open for hunting. (And during my hike late yesterday afternoon I did hear shots well off in the distance.)

And second, in addition to turkey season opening at the end of the week it will also be Deer Youth Weekend and Novice Weekend. The sound of both of those things makes this non-hunter a little nervous. ;-)
