Super Ivy

With the Ivy League football website quiet (surprised?) about former Ivy players in the Super Bowl, here's the info you were looking for:

CHIEFS

WR Justin Watson, Penn

C Hunter Nourzad, Cornell (Penn State grad transfer)

TE Anthony Firkser, Harvard (practice squad)

EAGLES

LB Jalyx Hunt, Cornell (Houston Christian transfer)

That got me thinking about the Ivy League presence in each Super Bowl over the years. To find the answer, I went to the Ivy football records book HERE.

Unfortunately, that guide does not list Super Bowl appearances by year, so I had to type the names and year into a spreadsheet and then do a sort. I also had to research the Super Bowl teams the Ivy products played for, which got a little tricky because a player might be listed on a roster for a particular year but his Super Bowl appearance, coming in January, was the next year.

The Ivy record book also has a few mistakes (one of Kenny Hill's appearances is missing, and John Spagnola is listed as Josh). Worse yet, it does not differentiate between players who were on the active rosters for the game, and those on practice squads or injured reserve.

John Lovett, for example, never actually played with the Chiefs, but is on the list for the '19 Super Bowl. (That being the case, I've added Dartmouth's Adam Young, who was a tight end on the Giants practice squad for the 2000 season.)

Did I make a mistake or two reworking the list? Good chance. Are there more Ivy Leaguers who were on practice squads or injured reserve who should be on this list? Probably. For what it's worth, either they should be added, or some on the list should be dropped, but I'm going to leave it up to you to share additions or deletions and why, via email. I've already spent too much time on this. I'll make those changes a year from now – if I'm still doing BGA. If you spot an egregious error, I'll fix it and let readers know in a timely matter what the mistake was.

In the meantime, this should give you a good – if perhaps not perfect – look at the year-by-year presence of former Ivy League players in the Super Bowl.

EXTRA POINT

Someone who knows about our 1984 VW camper van spotted this on social media and shared it with Mrs. BGA.

I've seen the future. ;-(
