HANOVER – A decisive victory by one of the two teams was not what Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens had in mind for the annual Green-White scrimmage.
Then again, the lopsided final score made for a good teaching point.
“In all these opportunities there's a lesson learned,” Teevens said. “And the lesson is, you are as good as you play. Not as good as you think you might be."

HANOVER – Freshman quarterbacks Tim McManus and Will Deevy were a combined 14-of-18 for 212 yards and tailback Hudson Smythe added a 46-yard touchdown pass to lead their White team to a commanding 27-0 victory over the Green in Dartmouth's annual Green-White scrimmage Saturday on Memorial Field.
McManus was 5-for-7 for 105 yards and a touchdown, Deevy was 9-for-11 for 107 yards and a touchdown and Donald Kephart added field goals of 25 and 36 yards for the winners. Junior tailback Nate Servis caught nine passes for 124 yards, including a 44-yard toss from McManus that went for a touchdown. Junior Phil Galligan was on the receiving end of five passes for 125 yards, including the 46-yard option toss from Smythe. The White team's other touchdown was a 31-yard seam-burner from Deevy to freshman Kyle Battle.
Freshman TJ Cameron was the game's top ground gainer with four carries for 41 yards for the Green team. McManus has 45 yards on five carries before his 23-yard scramble was called back on a holding penalty.
Sophomore defensive end Marlon Alebiosu and junior linebacker Johari Wiggins finished the day with six tackles apiece while sophomore defensive tackle Josh Doherty recorded five stops and sophomore safety Tony Pastoors had four. Senior linebacker Joe Battaglia and freshman linebacker Alex Johns had three apiece. Doherty added a fumble recovery as did junior defensive end Malcolm Freberg.
Former Dartmouth coach Jake Crouthamel was the honorary coach of the Green team while his successor in Hanover, Joe Yukica, was the honorary coach of the White team. Current head coach Buddy Teevens played for both men.
After the game Teevens announced the 2008 Dartmouth captains. Elected by their teammates were junior offensive lineman Alex Rapp of St. Louis, junior tailback Milan Willliams of Mobile, Ala., and junior linebacker Andrew Dete of Marietta, Ga.
Dartmouth opens the 2008 season at Colgate on Sept. 20 and the home season a week later against New Hampshire. The Ivy League opener will be Oct. 4 at Pennsylvania.

The Ivy League Championship Series baseball doubleheader slated for Saturday afternoon was rained out. With the immediate forecast dire, it won't be made up until Tuesday, beginning at noon. If a third game is necessary it will be played Wednesday.
Rain, Rain Go Away
It's a miserable morning in Hanover with a miserable day on tap. The hourly forecast goes from "few showers" to "showers," beginning at 10 a.m., and the temperature could struggle to get out of the 40s. (It's 42 as I write this.)
The Green-White scrimmage will go on as planned with kickoff slated for 10:30 this morning. The big news coming out of the scrimmage: The quarterbacks – with the exception of Alex Jenny – will be live. That will give the coaches, the fans and the players a lot better idea about the pass rush and tackling, and allow the quarterbacks a chance to show their escapability. I'm looking forward to seeing what super-elusive freshman Tim McManus does.
While football will go on, things are looking dicey for the Ivy League Championship Baseball Series. Apparently a fan bus was to leave New York City with Columbia students, alums etc., at 7 this morning. I hope they brought their sleeping bags.
The forecast, by the way is worse for tomorrow. The National Weather Service has the chance of showers at 90 percent.

HANOVER – With head coach Buddy Teevens having a commitment immediately after Friday’s practice, it was as good a time as any to hit offensive coordinator Mike Hodgson and defensive coordinator Chris Wilkerson with the same question Teevens has been asked on several occasions this fall.
Who are going to be the Big Green X-factors next fall?
Check out Green Alert premium to find out which players they named.

Friday Story ... To Come
8:30 p.m.
Just got home and have to head back out again in minutes for family reasons. West Coasters might see today's story tonight, but you East Coasters might want to check in tomorrow morning. Sorry for the inconvenience but it was quite a thrash getting to practice today. I'll write later tonight when I can.

Fiedler Tees It Up
Maybe bowling will be next for Jay Fiedler, who seems to be enjoying his retirement. Fresh off his appearance in a pro volleyball event, the former Dartmouth quarterback and co-owner of a CBA basketball team teed it up in the LPGA's Stanford International Pro-Am in Aventura, Fla. From the Miami Herald (which also has a picture):
As expected, speedy Brown wide receiver Paul Raymond has signed with the New York Jets. Brown safety Jose Yearwood, meanwhile, will be reporting to a Kansas City Chiefs minicamp. The Brown website has a story.
The Brown pair will be joined in their NFL quest by a trio from Yale according to that school's website. Defensive tackle Brandt Hollander will report to a New York Jets minicamp, tight end Langston Johnson will get a look at a Tampa Bay Bucs minicamp and defensive back Nick Solakian will be in Cleveland where the Browns have agreed to terms in recent days with Columbia senior quarterback Craig Hormann and Columbia grad Steve Cargile claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos.
Remember, kickoff for the Green-White scrimmage tomorrow has been moved up to 10:30.
''I was hoping some people would charge me while I was hitting the golf ball, but it didn't happen,'' Fiedler said about not having defensive players harassing him. "On the football field, you're just reacting to what you see and trusting your instincts you build up.''Fiedler, confused with former quarterback A.J. Feeley in a media report about his volleyball exploits, apparently was confused with a former teammate in a Stanford International Pro-Am press release. It said: "Miami Dolphin kicker and Co-captain Jay Feely will also be hitting the links."

Thursday's Practice; Summing Up Spring Ball
By Bruce Wood

HANOVER – Today’s Dartmouth players may find it hard to believe, but when Buddy Teevens was a Big Green quarterback in the prehistoric 1970’s, spring practice in the Ivy League wasn’t 12 sessions long.
It was one day.
And truth be told, that one day didn’t amount to much more than a glorified uniform fitting.
