Recovered from surgery former Dartmouth linebacker Flo Orimolade '17, the Ivy League defensive player of the year as a senior, has three tackles as a defensive end for the Calgary Stampeders. The Stamps are off to an 0-2 start with a 23-20 loss in their opener at the Toronto Argonauts and a 15-9 loss at home to the BC Lions Thursday evening.

Speaking of Dartmouth alums in pro football, click HERE for a photo gallery that includes a shot of former defensive end Niko Lalos tossing a souvenir into the stands Wednesday at the end of Giants Fan Fest.

A NJ.com story with a story about the Giants' preseason opener tonight asks the question Which players have the most to gain? and says this about Lalos (LINK):

He’s gotten a lot of first-team reps with many players injured and will get a chance to show that his playmaking from last season (two forced turnovers) was not a fluke.

Looking ahead to the Giants’ preseason opener against the Jets tonight, The Athletic writes that Lalos is one of two outside linebackers who need “to get off to fast starts in the preseason because some of the top outside linebackers appear to be getting healthy.” (LINK)

Although I'm a traditionalist, I haven't been an alarmist when it comes to NIL but the agreement BYU football has reached with Built, what a school release refers to as a "manufacturer and distributor of healthy, great-tasting protein and energy products," has me wondering what's next. The BYU story begins this way (LINK):

BYU Athletics and current corporate partner Built Brands, LLC today announced an enhanced multi-year agreement to support the Cougar football program, while also pioneering separate innovative NIL agreements with individual members of the football team.

Built’s individual NIL agreements with BYU players include compensation to all members of the team, including compensation to all walk-on players in the amount comparable to the costs of tuition for the academic year.

Headline in an AP story spun out of the BYU announcement (LINK): Competitive advantage? BYU’s NIL deal could test limits

Green Alert Take: I'm not going to name schools here, but we used to joke after some poor Group of Five type school got caught paying players a few dollars what was probably happening at certain Power Five schools. Well, if BYU can work out an agreement like this with a brand you may have never heard of, what's school X that has a much higher profile going to be able to do? Where does it end?

And finally, I was saddened to learn yesterday of the passing of Jay Greenberg, who did such a terrific job on the Princeton Football blog. There are a lot of people writing on the internet without any real journalistic background but Jay was a pro's pro. He was a staff member at the Philadelphia Daily News, Toronto Sun and New York Post among others and authored books on the Philadelphia Flyers as well as helping Mark Howe write the autobiography, Gordie Howe's Son.

I spoke by phone with Jay every year in the week before the Dartmouth-Princeton game and sat next to him in the press box just about every year. He was a kind and gentle man with impeccable credentials who treated this ham-and-egger with the same respect I'm sure he showed those he worked alongside during a stint at Sports Illustrated. He was 71 and I will miss him.

EXTRA POINT
We dropped That Certain Dartmouth '14 off at Boston's Logan Airport yesterday afternoon after two weeks back here in the Upper Valley. I'm happy to say her return trip to Gunnison, Colo., where she works as an educational ranger for the National Park Service, went without incident after a much-delayed flight home.

I'm also glad to say our trip down to the airport and back in our new Bolt EV went smoothly with a quick stop at a mall on the way home to recharge the car. We plugged in, went inside to order Chinese in the foodcourt, and the charge was completed by the time we finished our meal. And here's the best part: The charge was . . . wait for it . . . free as an incentive to use the service!
