By The Numbers

Saw a Craig Haley posting this morning that got me digging up some numbers. First, Craig's listing of the best point differentials in the FCS in the first quarter in 2021:

  1. North Dakota State: +99 (130 scored, 31 allowed)
  2. South Dakota State: +84 (128, 44)
  3. Eastern Washington: +77 (160, 83)
  4. UIW: +67 (136, 69)
  5. Harvard: +59 (78, 19)
  6. Villanova: +57 (98, 41)
That got me wondering how Dartmouth has fared by quarter in each of its three consecutive 9-1 season. Here's what I found:

  • 2021 Dartmouth by quarters
  • First: 62-25 (+37)
  • Second: 113-54 (+61)
  • Third: 63-44 (+19)
  • Fourth: 61-25 (+37)
  • OT: 7-0

  • 2019 Dartmouth by quarters
  • First: 101-12 (+89)
  • Second: 114-34 (+80)
  • Third: 59-42 (+17)
  • Fourth: 59-36 (+23)
  • 2018 Dartmouth by quarters
  • First: 106-17 (+89)
  • Second: 80-37 (+43)
  • Third: 106-7 (+99)
  • Fourth: 48-59 (-11)
Here's the three-year summary:
  • First: +215
  • Second: +184
  • Third: +135
  • Fourth: +49
Here are which teams had the most dominating quarters over those three years:
  • First: +89 (2019, 2021)
  • Second: +80 (2019)
  • Third: +99 (2018)
  • Fourth: +37 (2021)

Here are which teams had the least dominating quarters over those three years:

  • First: +37 (2021)
  • Second: +43 (2018)
  • Third: +17 (2019)
  • Fourth: -11 (2018)

For context, here's Dartmouth's most recent Ivy League championship team prior to the current back-to-back champions, the 9-1 team from 2015:

  • First: 93-13 (+80)
  • Second: 83-32 (+51)
  • Third: 75-16 (+59)
  • Fourth: 37-40 (-3)

And here's the 10-0 team of 1996:
  • First: 66-33 (+33)
  • Second: 99-19 (+80)
  • Third: 56-37 (+19)
  • Fourth: 54-15 (+39)
So, what did we learn? Apparently not much, unless you spotted something I didn't. Did you?

The Connecticut Insider has a story about Dartmouth's 2021 defensive quality control coach under the headline, Meet Mickey Grace, UConn football team’s new offensive analyst: ‘She’s got a strength of character’ (LINK).

The Analyst has a story under the headline, FCS Roundtable of NFL Draft Experts: Sleeper Picks in which two of the three "experts" give a nod to Sacred Heart running back Julius Chestnut, who was injured and did not play in Dartmouth's 41-3 walkover against the Pioneers last fall. EXTRA POINT
Like most families, I'm sure, we have two sets of dishes at our house. There's the set we use most days and the one that comes out only on special occasions like the upcoming Easter Sunday.

On those occasions when the "good stuff" comes out and we have first-time company it can make for a fun Abbott and Costello Who's On First  type story.

Marywood pattern
First, a little background.

Mrs. BGA's name is Mary and our better china pattern is called Marywood.

Perhaps you can already see where this is going.

My mother used to give us assorted serving pieces of china for gifts and for years she would buy them at her favorite jewelry store/gift shop. When they didn't have a piece in stock and it had to be ordered, she would have them ship it directly to Mrs. BGA. In those cases, the conversation would go something like this:

"I would like to order a 13-inch oval serving platter in the Marywood pattern."

Clerk: "Wonderful. To whom should we make the gift card out?"

"Mary Wood."

Clerk: "That's the pattern. To whom are we sending it?"

"Mary Wood."

Clerk: "But who we are sending it to?"

"Mary Wood."

Clerk: "I'm confused."

I miss that . . .
