What's Up Wednesday

Dartmouth players had a day away from practice yesterday at Hanover's Storrs Pond Recreation Area. Find a slide show of pictures on BGA Premium. It's back to practice today with a story going up on the site tonight – as there is every single night until the end of the season.

The freshman issue of the school newspaper, The Dartmouth, has a piece headlined Every game was a fight’: A history of the greatest successes in Big Green football. Find the story HERE.

Green Alert Take: I'm not much of a fan of reading my own comments in other people's stories, but what's good for the goose is good for the gander, right? To the writer's credit, she did a good job and certainly did her homework with comments from Jack DeGange, who knows more about the history of Dartmouth football than anyone I know, from former quarterback Jay Fielder and even from former head coach John Lyons, who guided the Big Green to a couple of Ivy League championships.

There are a few paragraphs about football and a comment from wide receiver Paxton Scott in a story in The D headlined, Varsity student-athletes set goals for upcoming fall, highlight team culture. (LINK)

#

Former Dartmouth defensive end Niko Lalos thought he had a shot at making the New Orleans Saints roster but was let go yesterday in the final round of cuts. The practice squad will be announced today so there's still a chance he'll be in the Saints' system. (LINK)

Also getting bad news yesterday was former Dartmouth receiver/return specialist Drew Estrada, cut by the Houston Texans. Estrada was sidelined throughout camp with a leg injury and was never able to show what he could do.

#

It's now official. The Daily Progress reports that Dartmouth grad transfer John Paul Flores will start at left guard for Virginia. (LINK)

#

Former Dartmouth offensive lineman Jake Guidone, starting at center as a grad transfer at UConn, liked the way the Huskies played as a huge underdog at Utah State but was disappointed with the final result. He's featured in a story HERE.

Prefer listening to reading? You can hear Guidone talk about moving on from Dartmouth if you fast forward the UConn Coach's Show to the 6:45 mark. (If you listen from the start he mentions hydrating with pickle juice in the opening minutes ;-)

Guidone offers a bunch more thoughts in the final part of the Coach's Show HERE.

Still unsure what Name, Image, Likeness is all about? The Associated Press has an "explainer" HERE.

A lot of visitors to this page either took a history course at Dartmouth with Jere Daniell, or like me, had the wonderful opportunity to hear him give a talk about a time or a place in New Hampshire history. The Valley News has a very well done story earlier this week HERE about the legendary Dartmouth history professor who passed away last spring at age 89.

EXTRA POINT
Kids in our little Vermont town started school last week and this is the first day of classes for kids in Hanover. I'm sorry, but starting school before Labor Day is wrong!
