Welcome to September!

Former Dartmouth defensive back Tyron Herring made a splash in his first game as a grad transfer at Delaware, leading the team with nine tackles, picking off a pass and recovering a fumbled punt as the Blue Hens posted a 37-13 win over Stony Brook last night. (LINK)

The Boston Globe has a piece headlined New England college football: What to watch among 13 local teams that includes two paragraphs about the Big Green under the subhed, Dartmouth is “Playing for Buddy.” The blurb includes (LINK):
Dartmouth returns seven offensive and four defensive starters, including fifth-year quarterback Nick Howard and senior wide receiver Paxton Scott.

The Boston Herald has a piece headlined BC defensive backs John Pupel, Alex Washington set for Northern Illinois that centers largely around Dartmouth grad Pupel and Harvard product Washington. Regarding the former Big Green player, the story includes this (LINK):
Pupel was a graduate transfer to BC in 2022, but was injured and appeared in only four games with limited special teams’ duties. Pupel brought an urgency to training camp and won a starting position.
“He was the biggest surprise of camp,” said BC coach Jeff Hafley. “He was hurt last year, he had some issues and had to really get some good work done and the first time I saw him healthy was this spring.
“We liked what we saw on tape when we got him from Dartmouth. He’s smart, tough, he tackles and, in the spring, he jumped out at me. He just took the job and was constantly ascending with leadership, tackling, and lining guys up.”
And this, which you'll like:
“The Ivy league is good football and there are players in the Ivy League that get drafted and play in the NFL,” said Hafley. “There have been Ivy League guys that have transferred and done really well in FBS.”

Of course, with the exception of Herring at Delaware, this year's crop of grad transfers hasn't played yet so it's hard to be sure exactly what to expect. Out in Colorado one outlet tosses a little caution in the air with regard to another Dartmouth product. From the column (LINK):
Shane Cokes has been very solid on the other end, though there are questions about how his game translates from the Ivy League, and whether or not it’s concerning that it was the CU OL that he looked good against.

How did Dartmouth grad Robert Crockett end up grad transferring to Bryant of all places? There was a connection as a team preview on the school site notes (LINK):
Crockett III reunites with Coach Merritt after playing for him in high school at Christopher Columbus in Miami.

The Robert Morris roster has featured two Dartmouth grad transfers since it first went up, but in advance of the Colonials' opener Saturday at Air Force there's been a change. Defensive back Seth Verilus is still listed but running back Zack Bair is not. Now on the roster is defensive lineman Bobby Jefferson. (LINK)

All three of Dartmouth's non-conference opponents open tomorrow. New Hampshire will be at Stonehill, Lehigh will host Villanova and Colgate will be at Syracuse.
The Big Green, meanwhile, will be holding its first of two intrasquad scrimmages. For an idea about what to expect check out BGA Premium tonight and be sure to check back tomorrow for a look at how it went.
EXTRA POINT
I think it's fair to say most of us are annoyed by the CAPTCHA thingies to determine if you are someone who can fog a mirror before proceeding on the internet. Buses, crosswalks, stoplights, stairs and more you can't always pick out. You know the drill.
Listening to a country music station on the drive to practice yesterday I heard a promotional spot for the station that brought a smile. It said to prove you are not a robot you should click the boxes with a tractor.
By the way, did you know where CAPTCHA got its equally annoying name? Wikipedia says it stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart."
