Surprise, Surprise

Click the football to read about Dartmouth's late comeback against Merrimack yesterday. And be sure to return tomorrow for a notes column and Tuesday for The Optimist and The Pessimist, who you can be sure are champing at the bit with everything that happened yesterday.

It was a shocking opening day of Ivy League play with two of the top teams in recent seasons losing games against two of the teams that have struggled in recent years. Here's your wrap:

Brown 31, Harvard  28
A bad snap on a short Harvard  field goal attempt  in the final minute was scooped up by Nick Hudson, who returned it to the plus 27 (and then had to recover his own fumble). Brown quarterback Jake Willcox then hit Mark Mahoney in the end zone on the next play with 21 seconds left in the game. The Bears trailed by 11 points entering the fourth quarter. The crowd in Providence was 10,753.

Cornell 47, Yale 23
Quarterback Jameson Wang tossed four touchdown passes and ran for another to make Cornell coach Dan Swanstrom's first victory a biggie. The Big Red outgained Yale, 475 yards to 302. Cornell is 1-1 while Yale falls to 0-2. 1-1. (Thanks for the correction!) The rain-soaked game drew 12,444 to Schoellkopf Field.

Penn 27, Colgate 17
Aidan Sayin threw for 320 yards and three scores and tailback Malachi Hosley topped the century mark for the fifth game in a row with 17 carries for 131 yards, becoming the first Quaker to do that since 2003. Penn is 1-1 and Colgate  1-4. Attendance was 4,818 at Franklin Field.

Princeton  30, Howard 13
Jon Volker ran for 88 yards on just 12 carries as the Tigers piled up 195 yards on the ground one week after finishing with negative seven yards rushing. The Tigers led 23-0 with time running down in the third quarter despite quarterback Blaine McAllister being held to 5-of-19 passing for 80 yards. A crowd of 7,886 turned out in Princeton.

Georgetown 20, Columbia 17
After upsetting the Patriot League favorites in their opener, the Lions dropped the ball in Washington, D.C., giving up the decisive touchdown with 1:10 left. Columbia had an early 14-0 lead but turned the ball over four times, twice in Georgetown territory. The Hoyas are now 3-2 while Columbia is 1-1. Attendance at Georgetown was 3,359.

Elsewhere, Fordham was destroyed by Monmouth, 63-21, and Central Connecticut was off.

EXTRA POINT
Griff the Wonder Dog is a hero (but you already knew that). We left the house at 7:30 yesterday morning and didn't return until almost 7:30 last night. That's a long time but the big guy met us at the door, ran outside to take care of business and came right back to eat his dinner. That's a long day but he handled it with aplomb, as he aways does.
