Celebrating Success Cornell Style

Congratulations to Cornell not just for a rousing winter sports season but for not being afraid to value the oustanding accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Cornell web page that has a story headlined, "Celebrate the Success of Cornell's Championship Winter Sports Teams on Tuesday at Newman Arena." Here's the text:
Come celebrate the success of Cornell athletic teams from the winter season, including the women's ice hockey and wrestling team's national runner-up finishes, the men's basketball Sweet 16 run, men's ice hockey's NCAA appearance and ECAC title, gymnastics' Ivy Classic crown and the fencing team's top 15 NCAA finish with a celebration on Tuesday, April 6 beginning at 4 p.m. at Newman Arena. Featured guest speakers will include University President David J. Skorton, Vice President Susan Murphy and Director of Athletics Andy Noel. Doors open at 4 p.m., with the program beginning at 4:30 p.m., followed by an autograph session with the teams.

Come celebrate with the teams and their coaches, along with the Big Red cheerleaders and Pep Band. Cornell merchandise will be on sale as well. The celebration is free and open to the public.

Ever heard of Big Green Readers? The Daily Dartmouth has a story about the student-run program begun a few years ago by basketball player Mark Kissling '02 and currently co-run by baseball's Jake Pruner.

(Big Green baseball team, by the way, split doubleheaders at Cornell and Princeton over the weekend to give coach Bob Whalen the all-time Dartmouth win record and the Big Green a share of the Red Rolfe Division lead. Dartmouth opens the home season tomorrow against Williams.)

Each year when I take the kids out to State College for the Penn State Blue-White football game (which this year will be televised on ESPN2) they drag me into every last shop in town in search of Nittany Lion "stuff." It's truly amazing what you can put a logo on.

I mention that because, lest Dartmouth be completely outdone, you too can have your very own Dartmouth Big Green Clean/Dirty Dishwasher Magnet at the new low price of $2.99. That's right, for just $2.99 you can not only show your true colors but also show everyone whether the dishwasher is dirty or clean. Thanks for the link.

Four days after admissions results for the Ivy schools were released, Daily Pennsylvanian has a graphic on the Ivy's "Record-breaking rejections."

One final note. The NCAA men's basketball championship tonight is an intriguing matchup. As someone who enjoys rooting for the underdog, I'll be interested to find out how Butler does ... but I probably won't find out until tomorrow morning. The game tips at 9:21 Eastern. I'll probably make it through a half.
