You Make The Call

College football stadiums have some colorful nicknames. At Georgia they play "Between the Hedges." Clemson's home is "Death Valley." Ohio State has "The Horseshoe" and Michigan "The Big House." Florida plays in "The Swamp." Tennessee at "Rocky Top." Boise State plays on the "Smurf Turf."

If you could pick a nickname for Dartmouth's Memorial Field, what would you choose?

Could you see the Big Green rocking opponents in "The Quarry," an homage to the Granite of New Hampshire and the quarries across the river in Vermont?

How about cutting an opponent down to size in "The Woods" with the sound of a chainsaw coming over the PA on third downs?

Or perhaps making Memorial Field, "The End of the Road," for Ivy League foes?

I kind of like the idea of taking a visiting team to "The Woodshed," but that sounds a little self-indulgent ;-)

Voting will take place all week in the poll over there on the upper right. If you've got a better idea, email me. There's a link for that, too.
The Dartmouth junior varsity football team kicks off play this afternoon against the Middlebury varsity/jayvee. The annual game with the Panthers is usually held after the Big Green varsity starts play – and before Midd starts its eight-game slate – but the late start of the season has both schools kicking off their season next Saturday so this had to be it. Check BGA Premium tonight for coverage of the jayvee contest.
With the start of classes Dartmouth has added five players to the roster. Joining the Big Green are:

• Senior Evan Bloom, a 5-10, 185-pound defensive back from Nesconset, N.Y., who had a team-high 24 tackles in three jayvee games last fall and also plays lacrosse for the Big Green.

• Sophomore Eric Oberg, a 6-1, 195 athlete who could see time at wide receiver, running back or on the defensive side. He's the son of Curt Oberg ’78, the eighth-leading rusher in Dartmouth history.

• Sophomore Kevin Muzzi, a 5-11, 175 wide receiver from St. Joseph HS in Greenville, Miss., who came to Dartmouth hoping to play basketball.

• Freshman Jonathan Katzman, a 5-10, 165 kicker/punter from Menlo School in Atherton, Calif., and the son of former Dartmouth kicker Jim Katzman ’89.

• Freshman Paul Gudmundsson, a 6-2, 252-pound offensive lineman from St. Mark’s School in Dallas.
Vanderbilt linebacker Kellen Williams led the Commodores with nine tackles in last week's 38-3 pounding of Austin Peay. The son of former Dartmouth and Cincinnati Bengals' star linebacker Reggie Williams gets a nice mention in this story and talks about his career and his dad in this video:

It's not quite Oklahoma State, but former Dartmouth interim president Carol Folt stepped into a maelstrom at the University of North Carolina.

From an AP story:
"I imagined Carol Folt being at an alumni reunion ... and somebody raises their hand and asks, 'So are all these athletic problems behind us? Have we fixed them?'" (Carolina Provost James W.) Dean said. "I want her to be able to say, 'Yes.'"
